Introducing Jonah Bible Study Journal, why I wrote the study, who it's for and what makes it unique!

It’s finally here! And though we didn’t do a fancy launch or countdown - here’s our newest study: Jonah Bible Study Journal.
Like Psalms and Esther, it’s another study that walks WITH you through a book of the Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Our studies are designed to guide you into fresh ways of engaging with God’s word, teaching you how to study the Bible while also completing interactive practices that you’ll use for years to come in your own Bible study quiet time. In this study, we've updated the design and added more detailed description to better guide you in your study of Jonah. And ... we're introducing a few new ways to interact with Scripture, connecting you more deeply to the LORD through His Word!
So here’s a little background of our Jonah Bible Study Journal!

As I was completing our Esther study, a friend of mine asked which book was next. I shrugged and admitted that I wasn’t sure, despite having a list of ideas and suggestions. (I hadn't begun to really prayerfully consider what our next study would be!) My friend then began to share about her church’s recent study of the book of Jonah, a story most of us recall from when we were kids! (Who doesn’t know about Jonah and the whale, right?)
As I began prayerfully looking into the book of Jonah, I found myself surprised to understand that there was so much more going on besides the infamous whale! God's character shines through each circumstance - relentlessly chasing unrepentant Jonah, awe-inspiring sovereignty over storms and nature, compassionate love and mercy for all. So exciting to find a familiar story become completely NEW again! (I love that about the Bible ... when you discover something new and surprisingly fresh with each reading!) Thank you Rhonda for the suggestion!
Oddly enough, as I had began studying Jonah more deeply, a college friend of mine asked me to design a series of studies he’d created for his mission organization titled, “Who Is My Neighbor?”, focusing on sharing the good news with our diverse neighbors. To me, this was EXACTLY what God had been calling Jonah to do with his own diverse neighbors - even though Jonah didn’t quite share the message with a whole lot of love or mercy! What a parallel that the LORD had given me in studying for Jonah, while designing these books for my friend!
(By the way, if you want to check out TMS Global’s study, “Who Is My Neighbor?”, visit neighbor.study! The study workbooks will be published soon but the digital version is available now!

So, if you’ve never done one of my studies before you’re probably wondering if it’s for you! This study is designed to disciple you in God’s word, teaching and guiding you into new Bible study practices. Prompts are provided to guide your study whether you're new to deeper Bible study or you've been doing things like word studies and verse mapping for years!
It’s great for:
- those who want to go beyond just reading but don't know where to begin
- beginners who feel intimidated about deeper study
- those who are desperate for something new
- those who want to transform their quiet time
- small groups looking for a guided, discussion friendly study
- anyone who has felt like Jonah - a runaway in need of God's mercy and love
This study focuses on the themes of God’s love and mercy and our need for genuine repentance in order to walk in obedience. We’ll learn and practice:
- character & place studies
- comparing & contrasting
- topic & theme studies
- verse mapping
- engaging with Scripture creatively BEYOND coloring & drawing
- and how we can apply the book of Jonah to our lives TODAY!
Like our previous studies, our Jonah Bible Study Journal carefully guides you into deeper study … walking with you, discipling you to learn and practice NEW WAYS of engaging with Scripture. It includes prompts that will take you to parts of the Old and New Testaments, give you helpful Bible study tips and direct you to trustworthy outside (and free!) resources to begin to understand Hebrew meanings, cultural background and more. These study habits will be ones that you will use in years to come. And these habits are ones that you can share as you disciple others to engage more deeply with God’s word too!
